Steam capsule sizes: every dimension

Steam rejects an upload at the wrong size, so these are exact values, taken from the Steamworks store asset documentation and the library asset documentation. They are the same values the SteamKit capsule studio exports at.

Store capsules

Library assets

These appear in the Steam client rather than the store, once someone owns the game. They are easy to forget because a store page can be published without them.

The sizes Steam retired in 2024

Steam raised most capsule dimensions in August 2024, and the older sizes are no longer accepted for new submissions. A lot of guidance still in circulation quotes the retired values, so it is worth checking any number against this list:

  • Header capsule: 460 x 215 is retired. Use 920 x 430.
  • Small capsule: 231 x 87 is retired. Use 462 x 174.
  • Vertical capsule: 374 x 448 is retired. Use 748 x 896.

What Steam asks for in each one

The dimensions are only half the requirement. Valve gives separate guidance per format, and it genuinely differs. The advice for the small capsule is close to the opposite of the advice for the hero:

  • Header capsule: The logo must be clearly legible. Avoid any marketing copy beyond the game title.
  • Small capsule: Steam downscales this to 184x69 and 120x45. The logo should NEARLY FILL the frame or it is unreadable in a search result.
  • Main capsule: Key art with a legible logo. No marketing text beyond the title.
  • Vertical capsule: Graphically driven. The logo and game title only, no other text.
  • Page background: Steam heavily darkens and blurs the edges, so keep anything meaningful central. Generated from a screenshot if omitted.
  • Library capsule: The tallest format. Graphically driven, and the one players see most often.
  • Library header: Focus on branding. The logo must be clearly legible.
  • Library hero: NO TEXT — the logo is overlaid separately by Steam. Only the centre 860x380 is guaranteed to stay visible at every window size.
  • Library logo: Transparent PNG, logo only. Steam positions it for you, so leave no background.

Design for 120 x 45 first

The small capsule is the one most people see. Steam downscales it to 184 x 69 and again to 120 x 45 for search results, the discovery queue and most browsing surfaces, and it is generated automatically from your 462 x 174 upload, so you do not get to draw a separate version for it.

In practice that means a capsule has to survive being shown about the width of a thumbnail. A wordmark that reads comfortably at full size frequently turns into a grey smear at 120 x 45, and detailed key art loses its subject entirely. Checking the artwork at that size before uploading catches both.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a Steam header capsule?
920 x 430 pixels. It is the only capsule every Steam game is required to have, and it appears at the top of the store page, in Recommended For You, and in Big Picture mode.
What size is the Steam small capsule?
462 x 174 pixels. Steam automatically generates 184 x 69 and 120 x 45 versions from it, so the game logo has to stay readable at 120 x 45 or it is illegible in search results, which is where most browsing happens.
Did Steam change its capsule sizes?
Yes. Steam raised most capsule dimensions in August 2024 and no longer accepts the older sizes for new submissions. The retired values are 460 x 215 for the header, 231 x 87 for the small capsule and 374 x 448 for the vertical capsule. Use 920 x 430, 462 x 174 and 748 x 896 instead.
What file format do Steam capsules use?
PNG or JPG. Only the library logo needs transparency, because Steam composites it over the library hero itself, so that one must be a PNG with a real alpha channel.
Does the library hero need text on it?
No. Steam overlays the separate library logo asset on top of the hero, so any title burned into the hero artwork appears twice. Steam also only guarantees the centre 860 x 380 region stays visible, because the hero is cropped at narrower window sizes.
